Every month, just like millions of people, we pay tons of money towards insurance. Lukus and I have health, life, car, renter and earthquake (welcome to California!) insurance. I am super happy to have these policies, because they give me a sense of security in the event of a worst-case scenario. There are endless forms of insurance today- appropriate for every stage and every aspect of life. As the industry gets bigger it also gets more unusual.
For instance when we purchased insurance for our wedding celebration we were given the option to also purchase “Change of Heart” insurance in case one of us didn’t make it down the aisle!
However, even if you are fortunate enough to tie the knot, but aren’t sure it is going to last, there is an insurance for you. In a recent article in Time entitled “Divorce Insurance: Get Unhitched, Get a Payout” insurance for the disenfranchised heart is advertised. Find the marriage dissolution insurance a bad omen? Well there are several other forms of insurance that may be more applicable!
Have a gorgeous head of hair? You can go the route of the Steelers’ safety Troy Polamalu and insure your tresses. Head & Shoulders took out a $1 million policy through Lloyd’s of London on the legendary coif. This is probably a good thing, considering in 2006 football game, Kansas City Chiefs player Larry Johnson dragged Polamalu along the gridiron by his curly locks.
Polamalu’s hair, while amazing definitely is not the first to adopt an unusual insurance. Another example is food critic and food guide creator Egon Ronay. Although he arrived to the UK penniless, he was able to create a career for himself as a food critic. Appropriately it was his palate that he insured. Originally insured in 1993 for $375,000, this one makes a bit more sense, as Ronay’s taste was the source of his income.
