Seeing as the whole week has been dedicated to Halloween, today’s football post will have its own spooky twist. Wondering where I am going with this? Well you don’t have to wait much longer. Today we are going to look at some of the greatest curses that wreak havoc on the NFL and its players.
The Madden Cover Curse: One of the most popular video games is EA’s Madden Football. However for those NFL players who have the “honor” of appearing on the cover it is a different story. Each year the player that appeared on the cover is destined to have a bad season.
The Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx: Landing the cover of this magazine produces similar results as seen with The Madden Cover Curse. Of course what makes this one extra frightening is that it seems to assault not only NFL players, but also any other athlete foolish enough to accept the cover shot.
The Chunky Soup Curse: Campbell’s Chunky Soup seems innocent enough, but if you land that ad campaign as an NFL (offensive) player you better watch out. Appearing in the commercial is equivalent to certain injury or complete obscurity. Fortunately, while the individual player is hurt, the rest of his team is usually spared.
The Super Bowl Hangover: This curse attacks both the winning and losing teams of the previous season’s Super Bowl. If you make it to the big game, don’t expect to be back there the next year. This is especially true of the losing team, who is sure to have a sub par season the next year.
The Curse of 370: This curse claims the workhorse running backs of the NFL. According to the curse any running back who has more than 370 carries in a single season will be destined to mediocrity the following year. Some even say that the running backs career will never be the same again.
