Being Wooed By Jason Wu

Normally North On Harper takes Saturdays off, but there is nothing normal about this weekend.  After all, fashion week is in full swing.  And if fashion doesn’t sleep than neither do I!  Perhaps the designer that received the most press today was the up and coming star Jason Wu.  His name is most often associated with Michelle Obama who has worn several of his dresses.  As for Wu’s Fall 2011 Ready-To-Wear collection, well it shines all by itself.

Unlike Jenni Kayne’s collection, which was California Cool, Jason Wu’s feels East Coast Urban.  There is a feeling of commanding elegance that runs through the collection.  Don’t believe me?  Check out the images below…

These looks capture the demure element present throughout the show.  Despite the sheer top on the first look and the short-feathered dress on the second, these looks read as sweet- not sexy.  They are more of out-with-friends ensembles than first date.  (Note for my mother: Not that I have ever tried to look sexy, I am a lady! 😉 )

Now here are two women I wouldn’t want to mess with.  Again, there is lace and feathers, but these are definitely not little girl looks.  In fact, despite their Victorian collars, these women are distinctly modern.  Thanks to the strong tailoring in the pants and geometric element of their blouses.  These looks are very boardroom chic.

Again, modesty is king in Jason Wu’s collection.  And these two looks are no exception.  I like how both looks are broken up by belts, giving them a sense of proportion.  So, even if you aren’t a model these looks have the power to make the wearer look tall lean— and who doesn’t like that?!  Plus, the gold, nudes and blacks are such a sophisticated and timeless palette, making for very elegant gowns.
