Green With Style

It’s Earth Day!!!!  Hopefully everyone is making an effort to incorporate additional ways of caring for the Earth into their lives- and not just for day!  But for good!  So if you are looking for some ideas on how to be just a little greener, I’ve got them here.  Best part?  They all relate to your closet!  Because I know, it is chic to be green…

5 Ways To Be Stylishly Green:

Wear Vintage. If it is already made then no additional energy is needed to create a new garment.  While I don’t purchase a ton of vintage myself, I happily raid my mother’s closet and accept gently used clothing from close friends.  I also am known to give my younger sisters items when I no longer wear them.

Buy Fabric Made Of Natural Fibers. There is cotton, linen, silk, wool (including cashmere!) as well as less traditional fabrics like hemp and jute.  Unlike synthetic fabrics, these materials do not require masses of chemicals and processes to create.  Another bonus?  Natural fabrics feel nicer!

Use Green Cleaners. This means purchasing products that are phosphate free, as well as absent of dyes and fragrances. After all, we are so careful about what we put in our bodies, shouldn’t we be equally as careful about what we put on them?

Wash In Cold/ Line Dry. Okay, I know that when you spill sauce on your white shirt you are going to use hot water to get it out.  And I know using the dryer is about a million times more convenient.  So, I am not saying to give up these luxuries completely, but when possible try the alternatives!

Purchase Quality, Not Quantity. It is easy to want to buy all of the latest trends, however your budget may not agree.  So instead of settling on masses of cheap knockoffs, limit your number of purchases and invest in quality.  This way your pieces will last longer with less of a need to replace them.  Conservation at its finest!

  1. GREAT Tips!

  2. So glad to see a blogger take note of earth day. It’s such an important day. Last year I visited my local zoo and spent the day planting trees.

This year I’m stuck at work but I will definitely pay a visit to my garden later.

btw, I love your suggestions for being more “earth-friendly” Especially the natural fibers comment

  4. That is a cool dress. (I’d wear it! ) And great ideas.

  5. These are all great ideas. I am pretty good at following the first 4 of these. But, honestly, I had never thought about buying for quality over quantity. It really makes sense. Buying one really high quality handbag and having it last for a long time versus buying 10 cheap ones that you throw out because they just do not last is a much better idea. Thanks for sharing that one.

    Have a fabulous Friday.

  6. What is earth day?? I’ve never heard of it! But I love your advice here. Probably woul never wash in cold but all the rest…good stuff. I love linen fabrics for clothes.

Earth Day is a day to advocate better stewardship of the planet….. doing things in green manner.

As for washing in clothing in cold water— I do it all the time and still have clean and fresh smelling clothing!

  7. Yay for Earth Day! I completely agree that it’s tres chic to be green. I’m trying to be more mindful of the way that I shop and dress. I love shopping secondhand and am always happy to support eco-conscious designers. I thinks it’s important that we be aware of the effects of fast fashion and disposable clothing. It’s too often that people choose quantity over quality. One of my favorite things to do is to shop my boyfriend’s closet. I didn’t know that when we moved in together two years ago my closet would double! Only one of us is happy about that ha! xoxo

  8. thanks so much for stopping by my site. this is a fab post. i do wash in cold water and pretty much have to line dry just about everything i own these days. i want to buy more vintage pieces too.

    quality over quantity for sure!
hope to see you around again!

  9. These are great tips! That’s a really good point about natural fibers. I prefer them anyway, but never about them in an environmental way.

  10. Great ideas!

    Love the quality over quantity!
