Color Theory

(This is a post from Lindsey of Little Seed Big Apple.  I only recently discovered her blog, but with its infectious title, her post on fashion going ons and her own personal style, I couldn’t resist to include her among my beloved guest posters.  Make sure you take a moment to check out her blog as well!)

The Color Blocking trend has been a learn-as-you-go trend for me. How do you go from looking like a Saved By The Bell reject to like you walked off the Jil Sander S/S 2011 runway? There are a plethora of approaches you can take to embrace this season’s en vogue look, depending on just how adventurous you are. The best part is – you can dress it up, down and all around!

For those that are too timid to emblazon a full on complementary color wheel on your figure, opt for eye popping accessories and a simplistic outfit. Accessories are always your friend, and there’s nothing like a vibrant pair of heels and eye popping piece of jewelry to take your ensemble to the next level. Try a basic dress in black or white, and pick your favorite bright color to jazz up your accessories.

(Alexis here with a quick interjection— am I the only one insanely jealous of Lindsey’s Prada Rainbow sandals?!?!?!)

If you are ready to embrace this season’s trend, but are unsure how to proceed, I would opt for pops of color here and there. Pick a vibrant dress that accentuates your skin tone, and match it with a clutch and pair of pumps that fit the complimentary color scheme – remember the color wheel is your friend and opposites attract!

Use the color wheel as a point of reference:

If you are ready to go headfirst without fear – opt for a bright color on top and a darker, complementary color on the bottom. Don’t be afraid to pair an extremely bold pair of heels to pull your look together – Prada and Fendi have some fabulous color blocking accessories that are on sale right now at Barneys and Bergdorf!

No matter your comfort level, color blocking is a trend everyone should embrace this season!

  10. I’ve worked with the black outfit touched with color idea and I’m very comfortable with it, however I’ve yet to figure out the complimentary color scheme she talks about. I can totally see how it works though, and I love it on her!
