One of my favorite trends this summer is actually a beauty trend.  And it is a trend that initially frightened me.  Apparently, I scare easily.

Instead of playing the mind games I usually play with you (and because I am still somewhat sick and consequently not my witty self) let me get right to it.  I am talking about hot pink lips.

I think this trend speaks to me because it makes a statement on its own.  Plus it’s fun.  And like I always say— fashion & beauty should be fun.

So, I decided to try it out.  I went to Sephora with Lukus and basically tried on a million lip shades.  Part of why this trend made me nervous is because I have an olive complexion and I wasn’t sure I could pull it off without looking sickly (the irony here of course, is that when I took the photos of me wearing it I was sick).  I narrowed it down to 2 shades- one by Dior and one Sephora’s brand.  I ended up with the Sephora version because I still wasn’t totally sold on the idea.  Like I said, I was scared.

Me and my pink lips.

When I got home and played with it I realized I really liked it, but with most things there are some keys to wearing it:

1)   Try a lot of colors.  Not every shade of hot pink will work on every person.  You’ve got to try things out until you find one that works for you.

2)   Moisturize your lips.  A bright color is not forgiving!  So make sure your lips aren’t chapped.

3)   You’ve got to use lip liner.  The brighter the color the more likely it seems to bleed.  I recommend using Maybelline Color Sensational Clear Lipliner that Vahni of Grit & Glamour recently reviewed.

4)   Be confident!  Lips like this can’t be worn timidly.  So have fun with them.

(Yep.  This is the week’s NoH Does!!!  So send me a photo of your best pucker.  All photos due by the end of the day Friday, July 15th.  Email them along with your info and the name of the lip shade to alexis@northonharper.com.)

  1. That shade looks awesome on you. Since I have a dark brown skin tone, I use darker shades of pink to compliment my complexion. I think it you find the right shade of pink, everyone can enjoy this beauty trend. Happy Monday!

  2. Smart girl! Nothing like bright lipstick to make you feel better. I love the way it looks on you with the navy dress–just great! p.s. I highly recommend Korres–it’s all natural and available all over the world (they’re out of greece). Their tube of lip butter glaze in Quince goes with me everywhere! I also use their intense color lipstick which is super moisturizing.

  3. it looks awesome on you!!! you wear it so well. i love the line you wrote about scaring easily though, you are so cute and funny. =) great tips, especially the one about being confident! you can’t rock a big bold color without the confidence.

  4. Love it! Thank you for giving me permission to continue wearing my bright lipstick. I was just thinking the other day that after all these years, I might need to tone it down a tad. Not gonna do it!

  5. Killer color…you look great! Thanks much for the shout!

  6. It looks very pretty on you, but you don’t need much help.

I love pink lips, but don’t wear it too often….especially now when camping there is no lipstick.

  7. Girl, you are rocking the pink lips, I love it!!!

  8. I have been weeeeeearing my pink lipstick out, lady! I even rocked it at the pool in Vegas- bahaha. U can see it in my travel post- lol. Obsessed- you look great!!! I’ve been loving Coral and Deep Purples too 😉

  10. Love pink lips! And you look beautiful (sick or not!) Feel better soon :-)

  11. You look awesome, despite the sickness! Hope you feel better soon!!! Tomorrow night could possibly work for a hangout sesh…

  12. You’ve chosen the perfect colour there, lady. Gorgeous. I love the look…but as a redhead I suspect I may find it even harder than you to get the right shade!

  13. really cute. On you! haha pink on me and my skin tone is terrible. I go with a little red if i’m feeling fancy!

  14. Wow, you look so great with pink lips!!! That’s a great trend, I love it!!

  15. That color looks great on you! I actually think pink is flattering on everyone, the trick is finding the right pink. I look best in darker tones. I’ll see if I can get a shot in one of my pinks for nohodoes!

  16. You look gorgeous! I love a good pink like a nice red. Since, V’s post I’ve bought 3 new lipsticks and liner & I’m usually a gloss lady! lol Good post. -xxoo

  17. Have you tried Bobbi Brown’s Cosmic Raspberry? It’s awesome!

  18. I, too, have an olive complexion, so tend to stay away from ultra-bright colors. I’m also not a fan of the shape of my lips, so I tend to downplay my lips, and focus on my eyes instead… but I have to say that shade looks awesome on you, and I’m tempted to give it a shot!!

  19. Okay, you are too cute. Even sick. And I am freakishly afraid of bright reddish colors on my lips AND nails. That includes hot pink. I think my mother scared me as a kid, telling me I didn’t want too seem FAST. And as a result, I’m quite slow. But I will try. This will involve going to the store, because I only have light pinks, and brownish pinks. I’m so boring.

OK. I’m just gonna close my eyes and jump. . . .and if I can get a pic that’s not too horrendous, I’ll send it your way.

  20. That shade looks totally lovely on you. I’d love to know what shade you ended up with, I, too, have olive skin and have to be careful with hot pink shades.

Found you on The Loudmouth, what a pleasant surprise.
