Haute Handbags

Due to my growing midsection, looking at the coming fall fashion is slight depressing.  But that doesn’t mean I have completely given up on shopping.  Instead, I am trying to focus my energy on accessories.  More specifically, I am on the hunt for haute handbags.

Sometimes people balk at the expense of bags.  And not just those from top tier design labels.  I understand this, because quality bags aren’t cheap.  That being said, I think the price can be justified.

How?

Well I am so glad you asked:

1) Quality Handbags have longer shelf lives.  Don’t get me wrong.  There are definite trends in the world of bags.  Remember the satchel craze?  That being said, handbag trends have much shorter cycles and even if you buy one at the peak of popularity, there is a good chance you’ll be able to carry it again after a few seasons- at which point you we feel vintage and not dated.  Plus if you go for a bag that’s shape/detailing/etc. is iconic in its own right, you may be able to carry it for years and years without trend disruption.  When you consider the amount of wear you can get out of a quality bag suddenly the cost-per-wear goes way down.

2) Good Handbags are built to last.  This is good news- especially if you are planning to carry a bag for many years.  Handbags need to be built to take a lot of abuse.  Let’s be honest: we put too much in them, we carry them half-hazard and we place them in somewhat precarious locations.  Do this with a poorly made bag and you’ll be lucky to make it through a season.  So buying a bag with quality craftsmanship is key.  After all, who wants to be out running a day full of errands only to have their shoulder strap snap?

3) Handbags can elevate any outfit.  So you are wearing your uniform of jeans and a white button down or you have nothing to wear but you every day lbd.  That’s okay!  Add the right handbag and suddenly you are making a statement.  Venturing outside of the basics?  Don’t spend a fortune on a seasonal trend, but bump up the piece with the right bag.  Mixing high and low pieces is a key style tactic and when you want to embrace fashion, but are doing so on a budget.

So tell me, what do you look for in a handbag?

  1. For me, I look for versatility in the “good handbags” that I’ve acquired, (which are ones that I don’t mind splurging on) – mostly bags that I can take from on-the-go to filling it with files + shoes, haha! I mix both high and low price points, but I agree, if you can go for a quality bag then go for the gold. I really like the look of that Cynthia Vincent satchel!

  2. Of course I’m going to love this post Alexis! The great thing about bags is that they can go with any size or shape. I am all about long lasting bags especially from an ecological point of view which I think of often as a designer. I just don’t want to add to the dumping grounds and landfills that must be stuffed with H&M and Forever21 bags by now…anyway, love all your picks–so lovely! Hope you are feeling okay and taking good care of yourself!

  4. I bought a Michael Kors bag for myself for Christmas and my mom thought I was crazy to spend so much on a bag. But it is such a nice bag and the quality is amazing. I love it. It is a bag I can carry forever!

  5. I have quite a few handbags. A lot of them were fairly cheap (within the $25 to $50 price range), but I have a few that had pretty steep price tags. However, those few that cost the most have easily outlived every other bag I own or have ever had. I have no problem with paying more for a bag knowing that I will have it for a lifetime.

  6. I am so cheap when it comes to by a handbags $40 is my max and that is because I do not change them often and end up beating them up. They always end up nearly broken the poor things. More so now that I am a mom they are more of a carry all/ tote lol but I would def take an expensive bag as a gift any day.

  7. You know what, I totally agree with you. I don’t go in for expensive fashion or shoes really but I bought a gorgeous Mulberry leather handbag almost…wow, 5 years ago now, and it practically looks brand new still even though I use it on a daily basis.

I’m LOVING that Chloe bag you’ve featured, absolutely gorgeous!

  8. these handbags are stunning, love the second one the most! <3

  9. I do not think splurging on a good quality handbag is ever a waste of money. Every women should own at least one. I tend to buy brands like B Makowsky for everyday use. I save the really expensive ones for sometimes use. Another thing I prefer in a handbag are large bags. I tend to carry so much stuff.

  10. So true! I’m trying to save up for a great fall bag. I bought a good quality leather on last year. We’ll see what I come up with this year.

  11. i agree, Funny i was on another style blogger site earlier today. She was talking about being a hoarder of fashion. Then on the previous post she posted a fashion photo sporting a Coach bag. i happened to have the same bag in a kiwi green. That bag had to be over 15 years old. Her bag was in great condition, the same as mine. I think I paid maybe $250 way back when. I had since graduated to the couture bags. I am actually known for my hand bag collection. But to be honest at that level it is a status purchase. It’s beyond quality . It is saying this is who I am and what I am about. I make no qualms about it. Of course my husband things is crazy and wasteful, be he allows it because they make me oh so happy.

  12. I love any cute handbag that makes my heart sing! I have so many bags (mostly designer) that they are all my babies and I am constantly on the hunt for a new one. There’s nothing wrong with spending a pretty penny on an expensive bag because if it’s leather it will last you for years and years. I love my bags! They all make me sooo happy! Ha! Can you tell?
