The Orange Pout: How To Wear Orange Lipstick

One of the beauty trends I have been eyeing for spring is the orange pout. Seen on the DKNY, Rag & Bone and Prabal Gurung Spring 2014 runways, something tells me this will be a trend that is sure to build steam. And given that this is a bit more dramatic than spring’s typical pinks, here are things to consider when exploring the look…

How To Wear Orange Lipstick:

Why you should love this trend:
-It is different from your typical spring pinks – these lips make a statement!
-There is an orange for almost every skin tone – so don’t give up after trying just one!
-They are powerful, like a red lip, but playful at the same time -multidimensional lips, just like you!

Why you should incorporate it now:
-It is a great way to embrace the coming spring, even if the outside temps disagree
-The color will add depth to your winter wardrobe, and then once you start incorporating spring’s pastels the orange will add an unexpected brightness
-Bright lips can stand on their own or with very limited supporting make up

What to look for in a bright orange lipstick:
-High Impact Color: If you are going to go orange, go all in!
-Long Lasting Color: You don’t want a color that will be gone 20 minutes after application.  That being said, even the most long lasting of colors can require reapplication, so remember to keep it on you!
-Moisturizing:  Bold lips attract attention, so the last thing you want is for your lips to look dry and cracked beneath the color.  Going bold is a great time to pick something very moisturizing, as you can really slather it on.

Tell me, will you be embracing the bright orange pout this spring? I’d love to see your take on it!  Share your photo with me on Instagram (@northonharper) and tag it #orangepout!

  1. Great tips! I am still getting used to wearing red lipstick since I tend to shy away from bolder colors. I’m a lip gloss kinda gal. I would love to try this though. If I find a color I like, I will definitely IG you! I just realized we aren’t buds on IG. Visiting you now. Have a great day Alexis Grace!

  2. I definitely like the trend and picked up an orange shade recently. You can see the results here:

Would love to see if and when you pick one up yourself!

  3. wow i really like the colors on that runway. can’t wait for summer. xo

  4. Happymother says:

Last summer I bought an lipstick like in your second picture. I love wearing it.

  5. I would love to try an orange hue out, thanks for these great tips.

  6. I like the trend…in theory. I’ve known for years that red and orange lips look great on me. However, I’m just a simple swipe of gloss kinda girl. I have to really feel bold to want to wear either. Great tips, you’ve inspired me once again!

  7. I would give it a try even though I have no idea what I would look like with orangey lips.

  8. I love orange lipstick! I’m not sure if it’s the “most flattering” look for me, but it feels so summery!

  9. I love orange lipstick!

  10. I’m all about this- one of my goals for spring is find the perfect shade of orange and purple lipstick. :) On a mission! Great post.

  11. i love it! it looks great with that blue (fashion). hahaha i have an orangey blush and nail polish. i need to get some lipstick.

  12. I’m not really a beauty person, it’s all about the clothes for me, but I love seeing bold coloured beauty products on women and think they’re perfect for adding colour if you’re a bit more reserved when it comes to your clothes. I know these colours aren’t for everyone and you have to be a little bit daring to indulge but they are really fun.

  13. For me, this is more of a runway thing rather than reality… Honestly can’t imagine myself with bright lips, I think I am more of a classic colour sort of girl. :)

  14. Thank you for leaving such a kind comment on my blog! Your blog looks super interesting! I’ll gladly follow you on Facebook and Bloglovin from Finland!

  15. I’ve always wanted to try it, but never had the courage to. Maybe because I didn’t find the right hue to complement my skin tone. I’m having a difficult relationship with beauty products right now and in my attempt to find more healthy ones, I have given up lipstick for now and use a balm made solely of organic shea butter.

  16. Orange is my color. Well… my lip color…and hair color. I never liked lipstick on myself but I loooved the coral/orange Nicole Kidman wore in Practical Magic. I had a hard time finding the shade for me, but once I did I was in love. Seriously. Orange is the ONLY lip shade for me, no matter what the trend is.

  17. Bright lip colors are things that I usually stay away from, but I do like the way orange looks. Maybe I’ll give it a try some day.

  18. My sister loves orange lipstick! I can remember her making the statement way back in the day. She always said the same thing, it all about choosing the shade to match you skin tone:) But for me, I’m more of a pink gal. . .maybe I’ll try to mix it up this spring! If i look like a hot mess I’m blaming it on you! Kidding, kidding. I could never look like a mess. LOL.

  19. I love orange lipstick and will definitely keep wearing it this spring!

  20. I looove orange lipstick! One of my favourite looks for Spring and Summer. One of my favourite orange shades is MAC Korean Candy :)
