Whole Foods: Ginger Garlic Chili Sea Bass

A few weeks ago I wrote about clean eating and I was surprised by some of the feedback.  Especially the feedback that said it is “too hard” or “too time consuming” to eat clean.  Here’s the thing about clean eating: it can actually be very simple.  And to prove it to you, I thought I would share a recipe that can be prepared from start-to-finish in less than 20 minutes (and that is with my TERRIBLE knife skills, which require huge amounts of time to chop vegetables…).  I give you Ginger Garlic Chili Sea Bass.

– 2 large fillets of Sea Bass (This feeds the little one, Lukus and myself)
– 2 inch knob fresh Ginger, peeled and chopped into small matchsticks (or however you want!)
– 4 Garlic cloves, thinly sliced
– 4 Red Chili Peppers, deseeded and diced (This isn’t as spicy as it looks- promise!!!)
– ½ Onion, diced
– 1 Lime
– Soy Sauce or Coconut Aminos to taste (Our daughter is Gluten & Soy Free so we use the Coconut Aminos)
-Coconut Oil (enough to oil the pan)

Ready for a super simple recipe? Okay here it goes…

1.  Heat coconut oil in skillet on medium high temperature.  Add fish, skin-side down, sprinkle with a bit of soy/coconut aminos.  Allow it to cook for about 5 minutes.  Flip the fish and continue cooking for anoth 1-2 minutes.  Place on serving dish.
2.  Add the Ginger, Garlic, Chili and Onion to the pan and sauté for a few minutes (until onions begin to look translucent).  Squeeze lime over mixture.
3.  Pour mixture over fish and add desired additional soy.


How easy is that?

Here are a few extra tips to make for an even more delicious meal:
– You don’t have to use Sea Bass – get whatever fish is fresh and accessible to you!
– Don’t let the number of chili peppers scare you- once deseeded they are pretty mild.  My 1 ½ year old eats this up.
– Coconut Aminos can be purchased at most healthy grocery stores (eg Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s) and are a great alternative to soy sauce.
-If you do opt for the Coconut Aminos then this is the allergy free trifecta: Gluten-Free, Soy-Free, Dairy-Free
– I serve this over rice or with asparagus, makes for a healthy, delicious meal!


  1. This sounds so yummy! Yes it should be easy but in so many parts of the country it is not. In fact I live 20 miles outside Manhattan and was in a Pizza Parlor and I wanted to buy seltzer…carbonated water WITHOUT sweetener. But nope they did not have it. Then went across the street to the CVS to but it there. I looked all over, where is it? I bough it there before. But nope they no longer carry it. I could only buy soda or seltzer with artificial sweetener in it. God forbidden Americans eat or drink something that is not loaded with sugar (or tastes like it is) salt and fat. Pathetic. Ok done with that rant.

  7. I think you just need to make a choice, just as anything, whether you’re going to make the effort or not. It’s great that you are introducing this type of food to your little one. I love fish, and eat a lot of fresh fish since I grew up on it. The beauty about seafood is that it really takes no time at all to cook. Great recipe, it’s perfect for summer as well.

  8. Hmm so what exactly does “clean eating” mean? Does it mean healthy eating because if so, I think that eating healthy is great and easy! I’m a lover of fruit and veggies and that is what I mainly eat. That recipe you put up looks so delicious:)

    • Exactly! Not only is clean eating not difficult, it is one of the single most important things people can do for their health. But people have to want to change their habits and not just make excuses. :-)

  19. It’s not really that clean eating is hard, it’s that people think change is hard. In some ways it is. I think that sometimes recipes are intimidating and can have long lists of ingredients. What I like about your recipe is that it is simple and it doesn’t require buying things just for that particular dish. I definitely have my own cooking style, with the ingredients I turn to again and again and yet can still vary what i make from them. I suggest a blog post on a clean eating shopping list-pantry and fridge staples that would allow for quick and easy meals without recipes. :-)

  23. Wow great recipe I’ve been hitting the gym recently but need to clean up my diet a little bit more with out sacrificing the number calories I’m getting. I’ve got some white fish at the moment, it’s not sea bass but might try this out! You can also use Tamari as a wheat free alternative to soy sauce.

  28. What a yummy but lean protein complex carbohydrate meal, My hubby loves Sea Bass. I am actually trying to come up with something to compliment a lettuce wrap meal I am preparing tonight. I am going to make a ground turkey filling seasoned with ginger and some other goodies. I am going to do a rice dish for my hubby but need to come up with complex carb for myself.
